EDM #91 - Apple

I've been neglecting the blog for a bit...but I've got a good reason. I moved! That's right, got myself a spankin' new apartment in the sprawling metropolis that is Blodgett Mills, NY. I would not be surprised if this is the only blog being produced in Blodgett Mills or the only functional computer for that matter. So isolated is tiny Blodgett Mills, that TimeWarner took two weeks to get a technician out here to set up my internet connection. Anyways, I'm up and running now and here's a sketch to prove it!

This apple was picked before I moved. The sketch is from about a month ago and is only my third attempt at watercolors, so be kind. I tried a little salt to add some texture... not sure about the results.

Only your third attempt? Astounding! You've gotten the curve in at the stalk looking soooo realistic. I'm really impressed!

Nice job. It sure doesn't look like an early attempt.

Beautiful coloring - the area around the stem is particularly amazing. I feel as if I could dive right into the hole!

OMG you did a fantastic job on the apple! It looks like a gala apple. Yummy! I can't believe it's only your 3rd attempt. Did you take lessons/classes?

I haven't heard of using salt...at least not for painting :). At what point in the process do you sprinkle it on?

Thanks for all the comments...full disclosure time...while this is only my third watercolor I've been drawing and painting in other media forever and attended the School of Art and Design at Alfred University. So, I've definately got more experience than I let on. As to the salt idea...I bought a cheap watercolor kit at Borders taht came with a little bag of sea salt. The idea is you sprinkle it on still wet parts of the painting and it will soak up some of the color, giving it a spotted texture. Again, I'm not too sure about the results.
